Illium produces ionic liquids, organic salts that exist as liquids at temperatures below 100 degrees C. These liquids typically exhibit excellent thermal stability and conductivity. We have developed the world's first method for producing ionic liquids from biomass "waste" such as that derived from biofuel, pulp, paper, food and beverage industries. Potential applications of our sustainable ionic liquid technology include:

      - Biomass pretreatment to obtain high purity cellulose and glucose
      - Lubrication, Hydraulics
      - Solvents and catalysts for chemical and biochemical reactions
      - Extraction agents (liquid/liquid and liquid/gas)
      - Microwave adhesion
      - Flame retardants
      - Aramide welding
